Tempo Curves Considered Harmful
نویسندگان
چکیده
* The title is a paraphrase on Edsger W. Dijkstra's note in the March 1968 "Communications of the ACM", named "Goto Statement Considered Harmful". It stressed the importance of structure in computer programs. Knowing this, the parallel with unstructured representations of tempo (like tempo curves) is obvious.

Musical Tempo Curves
Timing models are essential to a variety of music related applications. In the field of performance research they facilitate the analysis of music interpretations. For performance synthesis they are essential for creating expressive performances. This paper details our approach to modelling musical tempo. An important issue is the description and implementation of continuous tempo transitions. ...
متن کاملThe perception of tempo in music.
Tempo is one factor that is frequently associated with the expressive nature of a piece of music. Composers often indicate the tempo of a piece of music through the use of numerical markings (beats min(-1)) and subjective terms (adagio, allegro). Three studies were conducted to assess whether listeners were able to make consistent judgments about tempo that varied from piece to piece. Listeners...
متن کاملA Two-Fold Dynamic Programming Approach to Beat Tracking for Audio Music with Time-Varying Tempo
Automatic beat tracking and tempo estimation are challenging tasks, especially for audio music with timevarying tempo. This paper proposes a two-fold dynamic programming (DP) approach to deal with beat tracking with time-varying tempo. In particular, the first DP computes the tempo curve from the tempogram. The second DP identifies the optimum beat positions from the novelty and tempo curves. E...
متن کاملA Cross-version Approach for Stabilizing Tempo-based Novelty Detection
The task of novelty detection with the objective of detecting changes regarding musical properties such as harmony, dynamics, timbre, or tempo is of fundamental importance when analyzing structural properties of music recordings. But for a specific audio version of a given piece of music, the novelty detection result may also crucially depend on the individual performance style of the musician....
متن کاملThe RUBATO Performance Workstation on NeXTSTEP
RUBATO is a software on the NEXTSTEP environment designed to receive score data, to analyze their structure, to shape corresponding performance data and to produce output data for sound production. The central object of RUBATO is the performance score. It is responsible for the transformation process from symbolic score data into physical performance data. This process is based upon performance...
